Postby siva s » Tue Jun 30, 2015 6:42 am

Unix originally began as a propriety operating system from Bell Laboratories, which later on spawned into different commercial versions. On the other hand, Linux is free, open source and intended as a non-propriety operating system for the masses.

If you add the GNU userland tools, you get GNU/Linux, which is a UNIX-like operating system. Along with GNU/Linux, there are several other UNIX-like operating systems, including the BSDs, (Open)Solaris, and some commercial operating systems (HP-UX and AIX are still kicking, IRIX hasn't seen activity since 2006).

Linux is a type of UNIX Clone. But if you cogitate Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) standards then, you can consider Linux as UNIX. To quote from Official Linux kernel README file:

LINUX was created as a response to Windows which is the most popular operating system nowadays, but it is actually a response to UNIX. UNIX is a very old operating system that was intended to operate on large computers and mainframes.
